Artificial intelligence has opened up exciting new pathways to invention, from self-driving vehicles to healthcare diagnostic technology, to automated financial and legal advisors. There is no doubt A.I. will radically transform – for the better – the way we live, work and interact in society.

Yet, questions remain. Already, evidence is emerging of inherent bias and discrimination in A.I. applications, causing widespread concern that an autonomous future will only exacerbate existing inequality and exclusion. Top thinkers across disciplines agree we should not wait for A.I. technology to mature before we intervene. Now is the time to take a mindful and measured approach to technology development, ensuring the right safeguards are incorporated from the very beginning.

The Globe and Mail, in partnership with Université de Montréal, hosted a forum for business leaders, researchers, investors and innovators to discuss the future of A.I. – the opportunities, risks and calls to action.
